On his return from South Africa, Gandhi’s first Ashram in India was established in the Kochrab area of Ahmedabad on 25 May 1915. The Ashram was then shifted on 17 June 1917 to a piece of open land on the banks of the river Sabarmati. Reasons for this shift were because he wanted to do some experiments in living e.g. farming, animal husbandry, cow breeding, Khadi and related constructive activities, for which he was in search of this kind of barren land.
The Sabarmati Ashram (also known as Harijan Ashram) was home to Mohandas Gandhi from 1917 until 1930 and served as one of the main centres of the Indian freedom struggle. Originally it was called the Satyagraha Ashram, reflecting the movement toward passive resistance launched by the Mahatma. It was also from here on 12 March 1930 that Gandhi launched the famous Dandi March 241 miles from the Ashram (with 78 companions) in protest of the British Salt Law, which taxed Indian salt in an effort to promote sales of British salt in India.

A master craftsmanship has made this mosque popular not only due to its religious significance but as well as among tourists equally, due to two minarets.

Architecture of Jhulta Minar :
The JhuLta Minar showcase genuine architectural craftsmanship of medieval India. They are constructed in the Gothic Muslim manner with Rajputana influences. The minar is 34 meters long and has three storeys. They include well-balanced balconies made of stone. The sole purpose of these balconies is to border the minaret. A stairway runs in the middle of the minaret. The minaret was designed with such an intention that applying a small amount of force on the upper arch of the mosque will lead to the shaking of every minaret simultaneously. Rani No Hajiro is a tomb complex constructed specially for the wives of the Mughal royalty. This complex is located near the famous Manek Chowk. The tombs are in a courtyard and the complex is like a peaceful oasis in the middle of a bustling area of the city. The art of Brocade, which is as old as the history of Gujarat itself, was introduced in the reign of Ahmed Shah. This beautifully hand woven Zari cloth was used to cover the graves of the queens. It is believed that the uncharacteristic construction of an open air design of the courtyard was built according to the desire of Ahmad Shah’s queen. It was unusual because before her request, the design was a large dome covering the grave and enclosed into anambulatory. A great example of the mix of Hindu, Jain and Islamic culture, Rani no Hajiro showcases intricate design and carving work on the walls and domes.  The burial place or the inner area is kept locked to maintain tranquillity and cleanliness of the place. The place is maintained by a family of caretakers, who have been doing this for almost five generations now. They ensure that it remains untainted and pure.

Architecture :
The Sarkhej Roza complex has been interpreted as being composed of both ‘jism'(body) and ‘ruh'(spirit), giving it the qualities of a human being.
Most of the buildings do not have arches and depend on pierced stone trellises for stability. In its architecture, Sarkhej Roza is an example of the early Islamic architectural culture of the region, which fused Islamic stylistic influences from Persia with Indian Hindu and Jain features to form a composite Indo-Saracenic architectural style.

The museum uses a simple but delicately detailed post and beam structure. Load bearing brick columns support concrete channels, which also support the wooden roof. The foundation is made of concrete and is raised about a foot from the ground. As the ashram was one of the epicenters of the country’s freedom movement, the government of India declared it as a Monument of National Importance. A museum named Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya was built within the ashram complex to preserve the works and memory of Gandhiji. In addition to this, it houses other institutions, structures, and a guesthouse and the ashram also conducts events to promote Gandhian ideology. Special events are held here on occasions related to Gandhi’s life and India’s freedom struggle.
The commission was Charles Correa’s first important work in private practice. To reflect the simplicity of Gandhi’s life and the incremental nature of a living institution the architect used modular units 6 meters x 6 meters of reinforced cement concrete connecting spaces, both open and covered, allowing for eventual expansion. Correa’s subtle changes in the enclosure allow for variety in the module’s lighting, temperature, and visual permeability.
